Strie & Cross Strie / Dragging
Venetian Works by LLV Decorative Painting - Mill Valley, CA
In a world that often values speed and repetition, we’re drawn to materials that feel slower and more considered—surfaces that carry the mark of the hand, and processes that rely as much on patience as they do on skill.
Strié, at its best, is one of those finishes. It’s a study in restraint and layering, where depth isn’t painted on, but built up gradually through translucent passes of glaze.
Traditional strié creates a simple linear movement through the surface. Its variations—glazing strié and cross strié—build on that idea in different ways.
With glazing strié, colour is layered in soft, transparent veils, so light seems to sit inside the surface rather than just reflect off it. With cross strié, those movements are layered in different directions, creating a quiet weave of texture that feels almost like fabric.
The result is subtle but present—structured, but never heavy.
At the centre of this work is the person applying it.
Leandro, founder of Venetian Works by LLV, approaches these finishes with a strong focus on timing and feel. It’s a process that depends on the right moment—when the glaze is open and responsive, and each movement leaves a clear, intentional mark.
These finishes aren’t suited to every space, and they don’t need to be. They tend to work best in rooms where there’s time to sit with them—living rooms, studies, bedrooms—places where a quieter kind of detail makes sense.
In both traditional and more contemporary interiors, they offer something simple but rare: a surface that feels settled, rather than styled.
Across Marin County—from Mill Valley to Tiburon, Belvedere, and Sausalito—these finishes appear in homes where the focus is less on statement, and more on atmosphere.
For those who appreciate that kind of quiet detail, strié offers a way to bring depth into a space without overwhelming it.
We’d be happy to talk through what might work for your project.
