Faux Bois / Wood graining
Venetian Works by LLV Decorative Painting - Mill Valley, CA
Faux bois is really about observing wood closely and understanding how it behaves.
It’s the art of recreating wood grain by hand — not to copy it perfectly, but to capture its character. A wall can take on the feeling of walnut. A door can suggest aged oak. A surface can carry the depth and rhythm of real timber, even when it isn’t.
The work starts with looking carefully at the material itself — how grain flows, where it tightens, where it opens up, and how it reacts to light.
From there, the surface is built up in layers. Glazes are applied by hand while still open, and the grain is formed in real time using brushes, combs, and soft tools. There’s a lot of control involved, but also a lot of timing and feel.
Walnut tends to want depth and contrast. Oak needs structure. Maple asks for a lighter touch. Each one has its own pace.
What’s interesting about faux bois is that it can do things real wood can’t — it can run seamlessly across large areas, wrap architectural details, or recreate species that are rare or no longer available.
At Venetian Works, we treat it with the same care as plaster work. Nothing is rushed. The goal is simply to make it feel believable and at home in the space.
These aren’t decorative effects. They’re surfaces that sit quietly within the architecture.
