Gilding / Gold Leaf Work
Venetian Works by LLV Decorative Painting - Mill Valley, CA
Gilding has a way of changing how a space feels.
Whether it’s gold leaf on a ceiling detail, a fireplace surround, a piece of furniture, or a simple architectural accent, it brings a warmth and quiet radiance that paint or metallic finishes can’t really replicate. It catches the light in a way that feels almost alive — soft, reflective, and deeply material.
Venetian Works offers gilding and gold leaf application throughout Mill Valley, Marin County, and the San Francisco Bay Area, with Leandro Lopez Velazquez bringing many years of hands-on experience to each project.
At its core, gilding is the process of applying extremely thin sheets of gold, silver, or metal leaf to a prepared surface. It’s a careful, precise craft. The surface has to be properly prepared, the adhesive applied at exactly the right moment, and the leaf laid by hand with a steady, controlled touch.
It’s delicate work — the material is so fine that even a small mistake can tear it or leave gaps. That’s why experience matters so much here. Over time, the process becomes less about effort and more about feel.
Leandro works with both traditional water gilding and oil gilding techniques, depending on the surface and the effect being created. Each one has its own character and behaviour, and the approach is adjusted accordingly.
Gilding can be used in many different ways — from restoring antique frames and furniture to finishing architectural moldings, ceiling details, mirrors, doors, and feature walls.
The material itself is flexible in tone as well. It can be bright and highly reflective, using 24-karat gold leaf, or softer and more muted with silver or composition leaf. It can also be finished clean and polished, or gently aged to suggest history and time.
For designers, architects, and homeowners throughout Mill Valley, Belvedere, Ross, Kentfield, and the wider Bay Area, gilding offers a way to bring warmth and detail into a space without overwhelming it.
At Venetian Works, the aim is always the same — to let the material speak for itself, and to apply it in a way that feels natural in the space it lives in.
